Pagosa Springs is famous for its geothermal water. Here is how to enjoy it well.
The Mother Spring
Pagosa Springs is home to the Mother Spring, believed to be the deepest geothermal hot spring in the world. Its hot mineral water feeds the soaking pools in town along the San Juan River. Several venues in and around town offer public soaking, each with its own character, hours and prices.
Planning your soak
Hours, prices and reservation rules change by season, so check with the venue before you go. Soaking after a hike or a ski day is the classic Pagosa evening, and quieter weekday mornings are often easier than weekend afternoons. Bring a towel, flip-flops and water.
Soaking at altitude
Hot water and elevation both affect your body. Pagosa is at about 7,100 feet, so keep soaks to a sensible length, drink water before and after, step out if you feel lightheaded and avoid alcohol while soaking. Take extra care with children, older guests and anyone with heart or blood pressure concerns, and ask a doctor if you are unsure.
A tub of your own
If you would rather soak in private, some of our homes include a private hot tub, which is especially nice on cold nights. See our rentals with a hot tub, and read the home's notes for tub guidance.
Etiquette and safety checklist
Shower before you soak if the venue asks you to, keep glass out of the pools, follow posted time limits and temperatures, and never soak alone if you are feeling unwell. Staying hydrated matters more than usual at altitude. If children are with you, check each venue's age and supervision rules before you go.
Making a day of it
A soak pairs well with the rest of town. Walk the Riverwalk beside the San Juan River, browse downtown, or add a scenic drive to Chimney Rock National Monument in season. In winter, a soak is the natural finish to a day at Wolf Creek.
Where to stay
Many guests choose a home close to town so the soaking venues are a short drive away. If you want the option of a private soak, look at homes with a hot tub. Our guest guide covers arrival, altitude and local tips.
