Wolf Creek Ski Area is about 40 minutes from Pagosa Springs. A little preparation makes the trip smooth.

Before you drive

Check Colorado road conditions before you leave. The route to Wolf Creek crosses Wolf Creek Pass, which tops out above 10,000 feet, and weather can change quickly. US-160 is plowed and heavily traveled all season, but allow extra time on powder mornings.

Start with a full tank, carry traction devices and keep an emergency kit with water, a blanket and a charged phone in the car. If you are coming from a low-elevation state, winter tires or all-wheel drive are smart.

Altitude

Pagosa Springs is at about 7,100 feet and the ski area is far higher. Drink more water than you normally would, go easy on alcohol the first night and pace the first ski day. Sun at elevation is strong even in winter, so wear sunscreen and goggles.

What to pack

Layers matter more than any single heavy coat: base layer, insulating mid layer and a waterproof shell. Pack warm socks, gloves with a spare pair, a neck gaiter, sunscreen and lip balm. Boots with good tread are useful for icy mornings in town, and flip-flops for the walk to the hot tub if your home has one.

Your Pagosa base

A home in town gives you a kitchen for packing lunches, a fireplace or hot tub for the evening and laundry for wet gear. Many of our homes sleep six or more. Check availability on our booking page and ask us about longer stays.

Not everyone has to ski

A mixed group is easy to plan for in Pagosa. Skiers head up the pass while others soak in the hot springs, walk the Riverwalk downtown or settle in with a book by the fireplace. Meeting back at the house for dinner means everyone gets the trip they wanted, and a home with a full kitchen makes group meals simple.

A simple ski-day rhythm

Eat breakfast at the house, leave early to beat road traffic and the afternoon weather, and plan to be off the mountain while there is still light for the drive back. Back in town, rinse gear, hang boots to dry and finish with a soak. Keep the next morning flexible if the group is feeling the altitude.

Winter driving reminders

Slow down on the pass, leave extra following distance and avoid sudden braking on ice. Keep the headlights on, clear snow from the whole car before driving, and do not rely on cell coverage on the mountain, so download your route in advance.
